Actually, the EPA admits that the least environmentally-damaging habit is to keep an old car on the road as long as possible. The faster they are thrown away, the more resources wasted. This holds true even when they need major repairs. It is **still** better from an environmental standpoint to repair than discard and replace.
Once again, you have to look on the "back end" too, not just the front end.
