A taller element certainly won't hurt a thing. If it extends past the top of the housing you'll have some cold weather starting issues -- hard starting and choke stays on longer -- but that's all. I increased the size of the snorkel on an early American (63) and it made a world of difference! I used a 4" diameter can and squashed it into an oval shape, cut one end to fit the cnotour of the breather housing. When I cut the larger hole in the housing I left tabs to river the can to. A little paintable caulk and black paint later it looked factory! Much easier breathing than the orignal 2" snorkel.
