Rich,
In most cases you cannot war out one gear without doing damage to the 
other gear. If one gear is damaged then the damaged gear will in turn 
damage any new gear you install with it. Most folks ruin a gear, then 
continue to add new gear to replace the bad gear and often will eat up 
3-4 gears before realizing the gear they are not replacing is causing 
the problem.

The next thing is gear compatability. Every gear made for AMC is not 
compatable with every other gear made for AMC. Many, many folks sell 
CROWN gears as real AMC gears. They ARE NOT!!!!! The tooth shape is not 
correct to mesh with other brands of gears. MATCHED SETS of gears don't 
seem to have problems.

Yes, in most every case you can shim distributior gerars. All you do is 
check the endplay and add distributor shims to set the end clearence. 
Many stone stock point type distributors have way too much end play for 
proper timing to be3 closely maintained. When the distributor shaft 
moves up and dpown it changes the timing .

There are many issues which cause distributor gear problems. Oiling , 
brands of gears, cam walk, etc. You must first determine WHY you are 
having the problem, then fix the problem. Just tossing in gear after 
gear does nothing except pump you oil system completely full of metal 
shavings which in turn wipes out all the bearings & eats up the crank.
