A few of the facebook comments (and all appreciated)
Have you tried a different IM Eddie?
Hard start is either a lack of spark or a lack of fuel. On the fuel side it
could be the carb is draining down. For spark it could be a faulty coil.
Starting and stalling is all part of owning a carb'd vehicle pump it once
more and restart it
Have you tried another IM in place of the new one. We get reports of faulty
new ones --$34 one does not indicate a really good one. The good ones are
running about twice that much these days. For about $100 you can replace the
dizzy and the electronics with a Skip White Delco style all-on-one
distributor.
Take a good close look at the wiring going to the distributor and ignition
'computer'. Somewhere along the way I think a piece of the wiring is a
'resistance wire', and it functions like a ballast resistor in a Chrysler.
If it is bad, the car will crank and start, but die as soon as the key
returns to the run position.
Check the rubber fuel line from the pump to the delivery line. It took me
two months to find a crack in that rubber hose back there. My car ran fine
but it would die for no apparent reason. Turned out to be a rotten hose back
there.
sounds like fuel supply to me. Gunky and clogged sock on the pickup, clogged
fuel filter, a glob of crud floating in the tank, stuck float in the carb,
pin hole in a fuel line allowing it to siphon back to the tank....anything
that will cause the fuel to not be in the carb.
See if there is a heat gasket under the carb i ni it sounds weird but some
cars around that time have them and when they tend to acked up sometimes
they ack like what your saying are the symtons or next move is to change the
coil or your disturbuter may be acking up
I had a rotted rubber fuel line from that went to the pump's supply line.
But, I was not getting a gas to the carb when that happened. The resistance
wire could be the culprit but they usually are good or not good.
I agree with Doug. Those ignition modules are good for this sort of
shenanigans.
Even back in the day when these cars were newer the Motorcraft Replacement
IM's went from junk to somewhat reliable, and the price indicated which was
which.
my replies: On the IM, if that is the ignition module, yes, changed it out,
$34 at O'Reillys, got the good one not shit house brand. Gas appears to be
going into cab, there is NO emissions hooked up. Can look down carb and push
acc rod and see gas go down no problem. Idles great once started. Coil...I
did not replace, yet! Carb pump, didn't think of that but seems to be more
electronic than fuel. From amc list: " check the stepper motor on the
feedback carb. I believe the o rings tend to leak or the motor quits working
and sticks in one place. Then it either lean or rich." Not sure where this
is but do remember Steppenwolf back in 1960s. Appreciate all the replies
also so far. Doug, agreed, have bought 'brand new' starters at major parts
stores only to install them and no good and make like Groundhog Day of AMC
starters. One parts manager told me that when they send cores to be rebuilt
in Mexico, 'they only replace what is needed' so guess that is where
lifetime warranty comes come. Dan, will take a look around the distributor
did look well at wires around 'ignition computer' thing also. Well a 'cold
front' came in a few hours ago, and temps dropped from 78 to 40s in matter
of hour, and supposed to 'feel like' 14 tomorrow with wind chill, so will
have to put this 88 on hold & just drive Hornet, Concord, other Eagle or
Ambassador. I appreciate all the suggestions, and son even said why don't I
put small video on you tube like did years ago with Concord backfiring thru
carb, everyone figured that one out. Except me at time....

Carb float sticking shut? It'll run for a few seconds on what's in the carb,
then die. Needs more cranking to get gas back into the carb.
AMHIK. :)

Eagle starting question. My wife's 88 Eagle, recently started acting up.
you go to start it, turns over fine, sort of starts then dies. I have
changed the ignition module, starter relays, solenoid. Most times, just
cranks up, runs & drives great. But earlier today I took it to Office Depot
& it did same thing. On 3rd try cranking it ran fine, drove home. Ignition
rotor, cap, wires, plugs only about year old. Trouble shooting advise
appreciated.
