I read something recently on the forums where the early timing cover has a lip that kept the front seal in that was removed on later models to allow external front seal changes so you didn't have to pull the front cover to do them.
The extra bit was ground off and the later balancers were moved that much closer to the cover.

No, that's not it. I remembered it. Is there a spacer that goes on before the damper maybe? It seems there should be one there. It also looks like I have it on backwards but I verified I'm putting it on the way it came off, plus I have a scrap engine and verified it on that one too.
