I'm running one of those in my car. I have a hopped-up 4.0L now, but ran it for 10 years behind a 4.6L stroker. Keep it cool and it will last nearly forever! Mine had about 150K on it when I bought it, nothing but a fluid and filter change before installing. I've put at least 70K on it and it's still going strong. I don't have a radiator mounted cooler, only a medium duty external cooler. I haven't always been easy on it either! As Andrew said in another post, 87-95 models (possibly as late as 2000) have a separate trans controller. It needs a TPS signal from the throttle body, all other sensors are built into the trans. If you have a center console and arm rest it's easy to make a manual controller and skip the computer. I've been using one made from $10 in Radio Shack parts since 2003. I like the "manu-matic" myself! You put the column (or floor) shift lever in "D" (or whatever) but then have to manually select 1-4 with a switch. I use a simple rotary switch (like an old fashioned TV channel switch) with a toggle switch for the lock-up converter. I leave the converter locked (switch on) all the time normally. The AW4 NEVER locks in first gear, and only has engine braking in the top two gears (3 & 4 when in OD, 2 & 3 when in D). So you can drop to first gear at 100 mph and nothing happens. You'd have to rev the engine way up to get forward power though, so I usually back down through the gears by ha bit. That way if I see something and have to move quickly while slowing I can hit the gas and go! That saved me more than once!! -------------- Date: Sun, 4 Nov 2012 12:20:54 -0500 From: Jim Boone<fljab@xxxxxxxxxxx> I've been following this and have a Q - Unless I missed it, talk so far has been about using a manual trans; what about using the auto OD in a 2WD Cherokee? Do they have good ratios and is it upgradable for use behind a 4L stroker? It's my understanding this was a pretty reliable combo in stock form. -- Frank Swygert Editor - American Motors Cars Magazine www.amc-mag.com _______________________________________________ AMC-list mailing list AMC-list@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx http://list.amc-list.com/listinfo.cgi/amc-list-amc-list.com
