I pretty much echo Dan;s sentiments, except for the wiring harness. The 91-95 harness is one big fat harness with all the body wiring (lights, etc.) in it. It's a pain to separate it all out. It's much easier to use the Jeep harness and extend a few wires and change a few connectors -- if necessary. I don't have a problem stroking the engine and swapping at the same time. The stroker is all mechanical and has nothing to do with the wiring or electronics. A stroker will break-in and run with stock injectors and electronics with no mods. That's how I did mine. You will run out of injector at WOT though, so you will need to do some tweaking and get larger injectors, but all that can come later. You're not going to be running a new engine at WOT, or shouldn't (unless it's a drag race engine...). Here's the "five wires to fire" link. Dan left that one word out (wires), and it made a difference! http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums/showthread.php?t=533731 HESCO makes a $300 CPS relocation kit. The only thing I don't like about it (other than price!) is it uses a custom CPS sensor. I'd buy a spare. You can use a trigger wheel (I forget the number of teeth though!) and sensor instead. It's not hard to mod a YJ CPS to fit the stock bell either. It's as simple as drilling a 1/2" hole centered over the notches on the flywheel/holes in flexplate tone ring and rigging up something to bolt it in place (which can be as simple as a small piece of sheetmetal screwed to the bell, no welding required). The trick is to get the depth right. The tip needs to be almost touching a high spot. I pushed mine in until it lightly touched then raised it up "just a hair", locked in place, then turned the engine by hand to make sure it didn't hit. If all is well fire it up! The flywheel/flexplate doesn't expand any. You're looking for around 0.030" clearance, but there's no way to measure it. A new replacement CPS should come with a thin piece of cardb oard on the tip. If you have one of those install with the tip lightly touching and lock it down. The cardboard is the right thickness for spacing and comes off. ----------- Date: Wed, 31 Oct 2012 15:24:27 -0400 From: "Dan Strohl"<DStrohl@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Re: [AMC-list] AMC-list Digest, Vol 43, Issue 22 I've done the 4.0L swap into a 1979 AMX. My suggestions: * Get an OBD I (1991-1995) 4.0L. I know some guys prefer the Renix, and some don't mind the OBD II, but if you've never done something like this before, OBD I is fairly simple. * Get a donor Jeep that runs. That way you will have just about everything you need - computer, sensors, wiring harness, and all. I prefer the accessory layout of the YJ Wrangler and the ZJ Grand Cherokee over the XJ Cherokee. * Google "five to fire" for info on how to adapt the Jeep wiring harness to the AMC wiring harness. Plenty of CJ guys have already blazed that trail, so all you really have to do is follow in their footsteps. * If you can, get a 1999-up Grand Cherokee intake manifold. Not only does it flow better, but it provides more space in tight engine compartments. * Don't throw away the 258. The crankshaft and rods are in high demand by guys who like to stroke their 4.0L sixes. If you are planning to stroke your 4.0L (highly recommended), I'd suggest you swap it into your Pacer first, then stroke it. It's another step, but it can get maddening to try to separate out issues related to the stroker versus issues related to the swap when you do both at once. * The 4.0L will bolt up to any bellhousing the 258 bolted up to, but the bellhousings behind 4.0L engines had a mount for the crankshaft position sensor, which 258 bellhousings won't have. If you're using a 4.0L bellhousing, you're good to go. If not, you'll have to figure out a way to mount the CPS. I used an Advanced Adapters CPS relocation kit, but AA has apparently discontinued the kit since I bought mine. HESCO may have a kit - I haven't recently checked. -- Frank Swygert Editor - American Motors Cars Magazine www.amc-mag.com _______________________________________________ AMC-list mailing list AMC-list@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx http://list.amc-list.com/listinfo.cgi/amc-list-amc-list.com
