I'm replying to Andrew, the n following that to Jim, so scroll on down! A Jeep T-5 bell housing is relatively easy to find. All the " 77-88 or so six bells should be multi-pattern and capable of mounting " a T-5, some of the other holes may not be tapped but should be drilled. the other primary pattern on these bells is the wide ford toploader rectangle, used by amc/jeep for the t150 and t176/7/8, tremec-made toploaders. the t150 even has ford splines in and out and a ford pilot. these multipattern bells were used with v8s, 304s and even 360s iirc. -------------------------- So you basically state the comment I was going to make -- the AMC bell is likely heavier than the Ford Mustang because it was designed to be used in heavier duty applications, namely Jeep off-road. I don't have a Mustang bell handy to verify this, but I haven't heard of Jeepers having problems with the bells. If anyone would be breaking them it would be them! Some use 360s and 401s with low gearing and snatch them around on the rocks. ======================================================================= Date: Sun, 21 Oct 2012 19:25:01 -0400 From: Jim Boone<fljab@xxxxxxxxxxx> On the fitment - I'm confused. I see where there is an adapter plate that some use - but I'd thought GM input length is ~6-7/8" and OEM manuals on AMCs were that if T10 or more if going to the Ford T-type trans. More digging... ------------------ Only the AMC V-8 transmissions prior to 1979 have the long input shaft. I'm not sure about Jeeps, just talking cars now! The only manual used in cars from 79 on behind a V-8 was the SR4. The only other trans used was a 998 (no 360 in 79). The 1972+ AMC six bell is strong enough to be used in Jeeps, and it is 6-5/8" deep. Everyone uses the six cylinder bell (specifically 77-83) for T-5 (and other trans) conversions -- NOT the T-10 or V-8 three speed bell.
