Well, with Ford and AMC V-8s made in Canada the bit about switching to 
Ford because of Canadian content is a wash! There may be some truth in 
the story about Abernethey and Bricklin, but the fact that AMC was 
having a hard time supplying the engines is probably closer to the real 
reason. AMC probably didn't want to step up production (if they were 
even able -- may not have been!) for Bricklin because Bricklin couldn't 
promise to buy a steady number either. It costs a lot to expand an 
engine manufacturing line, and they may have been running near capacity 
as it was.
