Re: [AMC-list] I bought a Bricklin!

In another post you mentioned Javelin suspension. Javelin and Hornet are basically the same. Most of the parts you will find cross over to a V-8 Gremlin, I'd mention that when ordering.

Didn't realize you were in England until now! I haven't used a Diahatsu alternator, but Jeeps used a Nippondenso alternator in late models like the XJ, Wrangler, and Grand Wagoneer. They are fine, but need an external regulator. Starting around 96 the regulator was built into the engine computer. You can wire an old style Chrysler external regulator up to one though

This company sells a regulator specifically for this application:

I also found this info, which may help:
1. The regulator to use is Standard-Bluestreak P/N VR125. Many Mopars from the late '80s-up had the voltage regulator integrated into the computer, so your best bet is to find the reference P/N. You can, however use the '89 Diplomat reference to get an external regulator at a parts store, as I'm told they used external VRs as well. The electronic dual-field regulator is presumably compatible with all Chrysler alternators. (it will work up to the 90A models ND alternators, 120A is more than that regulator can handle). (another part number:Voltage Regulator part# MPI R296; Pigtail/Plug part# BWD PT173)

2.The B+ stud (wire to battery) should be fairly obvious - it's the one with the fenced black surround and a single large stud. The two studs with the common grey plastic surround are for the field coils, those will be fed by the regulator output. You must install an external regulator (as noted in #1) for the alternator to work. An early Chrysler regulator will work, as will most marine-type regulators. The donor harness may have four wires to the alternator instaead of merely three - the fourth one should be a case ground, which goes to any convenient stud on the alternator case. If you're looking at the donor harness and you see a moulded rubber block, that's a "convenience block" - it's meant to locate the wiring so the tech doesn't have to sort it out.

3. Wiring diagrams!

My AMC content - don't laugh - I put an original Motorola Alternator and
associated control unit on the '68 at the weekend. Believe it or not, it's
a better option than the Lucas ACR that was on there - and being stuck here
I can't just go to the local NAPA (there aren't any) for a Delco 11si or
similar. Anyone tried one of those little Diahatsu alternators?
