If you can remove that diaphragm I'd suggest you try to replace it with a similar thickness of rubber. Jobber houses like McMaster Carr offer sheets of rubber in various thicknesses for industrial uses. You might also find an old inner tube that would work. Also, you could check with one of the antique carburetor repair shops to see what rubber they use for rebuilding vacuum advances. These are just suggestions. I dont' have any experience with a similar repair. I might have a spare air cleaner that would work though. I've a 1981 AMC Spirit 6 cyl and the air intake trap door vacuum motor has failed. The vacuum motor doesn't move with vacuum applied and doesn't hold vacuum either. The trap door moves freely (not bound up) and since it opens in toward the carburetor intake, perhaps the engine air suction also opens it since the car runs (mostly). Is there a source for a replacement (or is it possible to repair?)? I've since removed trap door motor and uncrimped it to open it. The internal rubber diaphragm has a small tear in it at the point it folds. I've thought of patching this with some sort of glue (no patch, just glue). Searching on the web I found hits unrelated to AMCs but for other diaphragms suggested either gorilla glue (polyurethane) or Permatex Ultra Black Silicone. I'm also thinking of annealing the single metal part which gets crimped to try to avoid the crimps breaking off when recrimped.
