Armand
?
(0.00595) * (RPM * r) / (R1 * R2) = vehicle speed in miles/hour
??? where:
?????????? RPM = engine speed, in revolutions/minute
?????????? r = loaded tire radius (wheel center to pavement), in inches
?????????? R1 = transmission gear ratio
?????????? R2 = rear axle ratio
?
You can also google speed vs rpm calculator

I have a 2.73 ratio in the rear axle, the rear tires are 245/45R-16.
The tire is 24.7 inches in diameter
The T5 has a 3.35 first gear.
Fifth overdrive is .63

Can anyone expand on this?

What speed will the car be going in first gear at 2000 rpm.

What speed will the car be going in fifth gear at 2000 rpm.

I know there's a formula for this bt of course my used up brain cells cannot
figure it out.

thanks,

Armand

The tire should turn about 851 times in a mile, give or take about 4%. Tires of
the same size from different manufacturers sometimes have different rolling
diameters.
I figure 15.4 at 2000 in first and 82.4 and 2000 in 5th.

Swapping my AM15/D35 out for an AM20 I'm told the Eagle rears are the same width as the MJ/XJ Jeeps. I am doing an AMC-20 in my Comanche as well too. So anywho the AM20 I need is for a 71-74 Jav or the rare 86 HD MJ's well I gave up on finding a factory Comanche metric ton AM20 and set out in search of the Jav-20.

Comanche:
AMC-343/AX-5/AM-20x4.10s

Eagle:
AMC-290/T-5/IFS-30&AM-20x3.73s

Is how both will be setup ;-)

Joe Watson in Cincy; that's it!! I spent 10 years in Cincy; I'm surprised
I never met him (I did meet Matt Haas). Since I plan to never work on
another Renault ever again as long as I live, my books are just gathering
dust.

Thanks to Joe for jogging my memory.

Troy,
For the Matador - remember you need fuel, spark and air. Using this info, break the issue into 1/3 of the possible reasons.
Fuel - pour a dab straight into the carb and see if the engine tries to start. Bad filter, gumed up carb?
Spark - follow previous suggestions from Matt and Jesse. Check plugs, then measure resistance of wires, check cap, rotor, then check points, then condensor. I am sure one of these ol' timers can tell you the way we used to check condensors. One other step is to put a temporary battery voltage wire straight to the distributor. Many of those old cars used a resistor wire so not to burn up the points.
Air - other than removing the filter, may be alittle more complicated. Mechanical failures would probably not stop it from starting, just actually running.
Note?- you can buy a spark plug checker (while getting the voltmeter) and not have to worry about electrocuting yourself like myself (and I am sure Matt) have done many times. Also, if you value your eyebrows, don't look down the carb while trying to start, when the engine is acting up.? ?:)
Good luck,
Eddie

I bought this 73 Matador and I have been starting it everyday for a month. Today it cranks but it wont fire up. I guessed the solenoid so I put a screw driver between the posts and got no spark with the key on and off. I'll get a soleniod this week, any other ideas I should check or does this sound like the issue?
?
Troy?
Your starting problem isn't the solenoid. If it were that, the engine
wouldn't crank at all.

Start with the simple stuff before throwing parts at it. First thing is
to make sure there is spark. You can do that by pulling a plug wire off,
pulling back the boot so the terminal is exposed and holding it about a
1/4" from the end of the plug. With someone cranking the engine, you
should see a nice blue spark.

If that checks out, the next thing to do is check fuel. Remove the air
cleaner and hold the choke open. While looking down the carb, open the
throttle all the way. You should hear and see a steady stream of fuel.
If not, you have no fuel.

Matt

Be sure to check your voltage at the coil and at the solenoid during cranking where the solenoid is supposed to be sending full voltage to the coil... though I am not sure if your ign system has been upgraded. ?When it's in the "run" it uses reduced voltage. ?Check your owner's manual for exact specs. ?If you don't have a voltmeter, go to Sears or Harbor Freight and get one....less than $20 and well worth it! ?

Also, do a quick voltage drop test... might take a buddy to help you with it... go to the internet to find out how. ?Very often the case is there is enough voltage to crank, but not enough to energize the ign during the start sequence. ?

Also, go out and buy a vacuum gauge/fuel pressure tester... also CHEAP! ?plumb into your fuel line and find out if you're getting adequate pressure. ?once you get it running again, the vacuum side will give you the opportunity to set optimal timing and set idle screws. ?

Proper diagnosis is the best way avoid throwing useless $$ at a problem that is never going to be fixed with the parts you are using! ?

Best of luck to ya!?

Jesse

What's the recommended? GL4?

Napa has a house brand that says GL3,GL4,GL5 on the bottle and also extreme
pressure which makes me think 'hypoid' which may not be good for transmissions.
(5.39/litre)
They also have an Amsoil manual tranny oil that actually mentions the T176 on
bottle but it's 13$+/litre.

thanks

the t176 is a ford toploader - ford sold tooling etc to tremec in the
mid '70s, then turned around and bought trannies [the srod] back. but
tremec was free to sell to others, which led to the t150 3sp in amcs.
[all the big 3 used 3sp toploaders]

the t160 was a hd 3sp for big blocks in the mid '60s, soon dropped.

ford toploaders, including the srod, also have model numbers in the
t170 series.

tremec developed the srod into a 5sp. combining some of the big-block
toploader tech, some versions are rated for 600 ft-lbs.

if the synchros are still the same, old skool gear oil would be my
guess. http://www.5speeds.com/toploader.html says that ford and jeep
innards swap, which makes me think they share lube spec too.
--
you also have to watch out - if the ep additives are sulfur based,
they can eat the synchros in trannies like the jeep ax15. it needs a
sulfur-free oil, iirc gl3. also iirc, pennzoil 'synchromesh' was the
gm and mopar oem lube, but that might've been for the nv3500 family.

I was going to put a '77 Matador M20 under my Eagle wagon from about 15 years ago, but couldn't find the ratio I wanted to match my 2.37 front.
My current Eagle wagon has 2.72 gears (vacuum front and M15 rear) that I'm selling as I am going with 3.08 non-vac front (from an '80 Eagle) and XJ 8.25 rear to match (after the shock mount swap)
I currently have a 727 and NP229 from a Grand Wagoneer in it (still need to add a low range shifter) and I'm modding it to shift on the fly with HO efi to go in (anyone know if the '99 up 4.0L intake will clear the booster?)

Yep they are the same width measured it myself 3 times, So if the Eagle is the same as the Cherokee and Comanche than I will get two of the 71-74 Jav-20's :-) my Comanche is SUA or Spring Under Axle if the Eagle isn't than that is an easy fix ;-)
