Re: [AMC-list] AMC smog equipment wanted

I wished I had $1 for every: original air cleaner I threw away or saw crushed at junkyards; any piece of smog/emissions AMC equipment I disposed of thru the years in 70's/80s or saw no one buy at Houston pick a part yards; every AMX or Javelin dash piece I drilled holes into for gauges; every door panel I (or someone) cut out for speakers. The emissions equipment was worst, I could waste all day telling you about junkyards down in Corpus Christi the breathers were great for putting dog food in; everyone tossed them back then it seemed to put on shiny Edelbrock, or Clifford or something on there, same with valve covers. And the emissions smog stuff like pumps, instantly was pulled, the holes in manifolds filled with plugs, welded and cut, and everything else thrown away. Your state may vary. No one ever bought the smog stuff at the Houston pick a parts. www.houstonpickapart.com in 80s/90s, all those thousands of aMCs that still had it simply went to crusher with it.

When they started getting heavy into smog equipment it depended on the motor size, trans (auto/manual 3 or 4 speed) rear end gear ratio. These were all taken into account at that time. You'll find same year/model cars with different smog controls because the items I listed. You could have a Hornet Hatchback, one with a smog pump and one without because of the difference in transmission. Later on everything got all the attachments.

I knew they had smog control on older cars but I didn't think it got real big until around 74 when they put the converters on them and went to the smaller gas filler holes so you only use unleaded gas. Now you guys are making be wonder about my 77. I bought it in 80 from the original owner who was an old man. It only had 17,000 miles on it. I remember when I looked at it that it didn't have a smog pump and had the bigger gas intake on it and I ask him about it. He said that was the way it came out of the factory. I think it has been a few years ago that some mechanics told me that it was last car they came that way. I know if the old man had it changed over he had some one do a lot of work. They would have had to out an older intake-exhaust manifold and a new exhaust system on it. Since it was the first year with the gas intake behind the plate I have no idea where they would have gotten the big gas intake from. My mother bought the 78 that have I have now abo
ut two months after I bought my 77 so I had a lot to compare it to and it looked factory to me. Something else I never understood. You know on most cars you can tell year of the car by looking at the tailights. The tailights on the 77&78 were both marked 76. I always thought that was strange since 77 was the first year they used those taillights.

If it was a California car then it definitely would have had all the smog equipment. Even back in 1966 some California cars had smog pumps.

I was just wondering if the guy is sure the car came with all that stuff new from the factory.
My 77 Gremlin with the 258 had only a pcv valve on it new. It didn't have an air pump or a catalitic converter. Now the 78 I have now with the 232 had everything on it.
