Thanks Jeff,

I have determined that AMC used two different versions of castings for the 
exterior of the head.
The engines I have from 1970 have one less bolthole boss on them that would 
bolt the A/C compressor bracket to the head
versus a 1976 401 head which has one more bolthole boss.

At this point I'm thinking I need to find the compressor bracket I have that 
fits the 70 heads.

The two brackets I have in my site are

1.     mounts a sanden compressor direct, it's from a late 80s Waggie)

2.    mounts a york compressor.

both the above brackets have more bolt holes on them that does the 70 head.

Any body able to add some enlightenment??  please ??
