" From: d stohler <das24rules@xxxxxxxxx> " " hey guys, i need some advice. if any of you have gone and seen my " picasaweb album labled "caspers cancer" (or something like that) " you can see my PRIDE AND JOY car has lots of rust in the chassis " area around the front foot well area. right from where the " "frame" comes downward, and turns rearward. it sat for around 20 " years in my grandpas field on flat tires. the front of the car " sunk, and sat in the mud, rusting out the front floor, and " chassis rails. it has gotten bad enough, i dont want to drive it " like this. its a '62 classic custom 2 door. the 2 doors are VERY " rare i assume, as i have only seen 1 other in person, and seen " actual current pictures of 2 or 3 others. i have a 4 door '62 " classic sitting here for parts. it has SOLID section that mine is " rusted out. if you look at the pics in my album, you can see what " im talking about. im SERIOUSLY contemplating cutting out the " entire front clip from just below the windshield, down to about " middle of the front seat, and replacing. MAJOR project. this car, " i love ALMOST more than the wife. i CANT stand the thought of " trashing this car. who thinks im crazy for doing this? can this " maybe be done and still have the chassis be strong? from the " middle of the front seat on back, car is pretty solid. has a " little rust repair needed in the trunk area where the rear bumper " mounts also. BUT ITS A 2 DOOR, AND MEANS THE WORLD TO ME!!! i " think 99% of people would just scrap it. right?? tomorrow night, " front end is starting to get stripped. EVERYTHING. fenders, " engine/trans, all suspension ect. unless someone can reason with " me why NOT to do this, wish me luck i guess?? o, and IF it all " gets done just right, it will all be coated with that tough " bedliner junk. if anyone has ever done anything like this, im " open for ANY tips. (i think im just going to screw this up and be " depressed the rest of my life) oddly, i was just thinking about this with another car. since it was just a thought experiment, my spare-no-expense, do-it-right approach was to strip both cars down to shells and deconstruct them by separating the panel seams. i figured that'd make the strongest, most seamless [if you'll pardon the expression] reconstruction. for you that wouldn't have to be all the seams, just enough to separate the rusted part from casper. you'd need real good jigging to line the parts up right before welding back together, but that's true any way you do it. as for bedliner, i looked into it for a friend a few years ago and learned a few things: the toughest bedliners are sprayed on hot, not something you can do at home. prep is 9/10ths of a good job. if you aren't diligent the liner will just bead up instead of sticking in a film. the liner stuff is urethane, though there's a range of chemistry. there are also urethane paints, and i've wondered if prep/primer/undercoat for them would be a good start for bedliner... weep holes. make sure when you bedliner up the underside you don't seal and trap moisture inside the structure anywhere. maybe spray/squirt some rust converter and/or rustproofing into those nooks and crannies before bedlining. there's rustproofing made for door insides that might be the thing. good luck to you, and your grandpa's memory. ________________________________________________________________________ Andrew Hay the genius nature internet rambler is to see what all have seen adh@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx and think what none thought _______________________________________________ AMC-list mailing list AMC-list@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx http://list.amc-list.com/listinfo.cgi/amc-list-amc-list.com
