Side notes here: I may add a LOT of people have went to fuel cells in recent memory because fuel tanks for our classic AMCs no longer exist, and a majority of them, zero chance of reproducion. We have seen 68-70 AMX & Javelin gas tanks reproduced in last 5 years, http://www.ramblerparts.com/04-8833a.jpg 1968-70 AMX & Javelin GAS TANKS $349.00 each plus shipping #04-8833. 04-8275 Gas Tank Sending Units $98.00 04-3974A Filter & O-ring Kits $13.90) 04-7857 Lock rings $4.25 04-8276A Gas Tank Kit (Tank, Kit, Sender + Ring) $449.00 Plus Shipping and there are still a small, but dwindling daily, stash of original Hornet/Gremlin/Concord ones still out there: http://www.gastanks.com/1976-87-AMX-Concord-Eagle-Hornet/productinfo/AMC-1/ but not all of them fit all Series, for instance that above won't fit Sportabout or SC/360 or pre 1976 models listed. Something I bring up with AMCers, especially 71-74 AMX Javelin people all the time is that if you have a good core, you can send it to Gas Tank Renu. I have had 3 tanks done by them and while the car might not be around in Y3K, the tank still would. They take them apart, blast, seal, clean, weld and the reseal them and better than NEW. http://www.gastankrenu.com/ The problem I tell AMC people with tanks is while they are possibly looking for a used tank, the bigger issue here is that the tanks were not intended to last this long, they have had chemicals stuff into them for decades,a nd depending on where you are at, gasoline blends differ from state to state you know all the designer sh*t gas on market. But this could have comprimised the integrity of the metal thru years also so while gas tank might look good on ebay, craigslist, ad, when you get it, metal could be paper thin, now you back to square one looking for a tank. And some used tanks command $350+ in 2011. So have to weigh all options out there when fixing up a AMC. As for Paul's 71 Sportabout, the fuel cell was a good choice for him. Anything done can always be undone you know. Same advise I have given people who might not like the 20 something year old paint and flairs on my 71 SC/360 when inquiring about it, they can always change it back, just a personal choice!
