68-69 maybe 70 were larger then the 71 and newer bearings ,whats happened
to you is
somewhere along the cars life someone put a newer T-10 trans in car and
still used the old bearing.
You can get yourself a 68 bearing retainer for your trans or get a 71 and
newer throwout bearing
and you should be fine

I think there are two throwout bearings. The earlier one is smaller in
diameter than the '70-up. You probably have the later bearing.
