I can't find my '71 Jeep Honcho catalog showing 304 4 bbl
as a factory option (I just remember it was VIN code D)
Anyone got a CJ catalog with that or did AMC only have the
SP2P in special packages?

Agreed on that experienced machinist thing.

When asked of a hometown machinist to work on AMC engine
pieces, his comment
pretty much went like this.
"You mean this isn't a chevy 350? I'm not sure what you're
talking about,
AMC? All the engines around here that we work on are 350
chevies. I didn't
know any other engines ever needed a
rebuild.............OH, wait a minute,
we work on tractor engine parts here too. We mostly turn
cranks, size rods
and do heads cause those blocks usually have wet sleeves.
but wait I'll ask
'turbo' if he knows anything about AMC."
response from 'turbo', "Yeah I heard of AMC, that's
American Movie Classics
on channel 69"

Sigh, I finally did find a great machinist in a little town
South of here
who knew exactly what an AMC is and said, "Yeah bring it
down we'll work on
it for you."

I found a couple.
One of them is still in pretty good shape, has all three
mounting pins.
Let me know if you want it.

I started working on my engine swap. I pulled the automatic
off the
232. No problems. I removed the bellhousing. I'm trying to
remove the
flexplate but running into issues. When I try to turn the
9/16" bolts,
the who flexplate revolves. Should I brace a screwdriver
between some
teeth to hold it still? Any tricks? If compression is good,
should the
flexplate turn as I try to remove the bolts?

Any hints and tricks? Or just hit all the bolts with
penetrating oil,
brace against the teeth (I'm not re-using the flexplate,
I'm swapping
to manual) and use a big ol' wrench?

Bruce,

Those flexplates are pretty fragile.?? I suggest that you
pull on spark plug and
insert a long piece of rope (3/8th inch cotton or nylon
will work).?? The rope
will act to cushion the piston against the cylinder head
and jam the piston so
the crank can't turn.? Leave one end of the rope sticking
out of the spark plug
hole so you can remove it easily when you have removed the
flexplate.
