Yesterday my wife's 258-6 Eagle started backfiring thru carb. Popping noise. Still runs,
but rough, and pop noise. I am sort of stumped on this and have read a variety of answers
all over place but carb jets appear to be clean, distributor cap fine although will
replace it, have not checked vacuum advance nor timing yet. Any advise appreciated, just
reply here & thanks in advance to all who might reply.

Usually, backfiring is a timing issue.
Is there any chance that the timing chain got loose and jumped a few teeth?
If the timing is out by a lot, look there.
