Re: [AMC-list] engine blowing up for charity

I know what you mean Russ. Several decades ago I was given an old full size chevy for like $25. It had a brand new battery in it. I wanted the battery. So after taking off parts that I thought might be valuable, we drove the car to the salvage yard on a Saturday afternoon after hours. It wouldn't go over about 45 mph no matter how hard we tried. At the yard, we drained the coolant, placed a brick on the accellerator, and started it up, it ran for a LLLLLOOOOONNNGGGG time at maybe 5000rpm, we thought it would overheat and sieze. Nope, it got so hot that the gunk on the outside of the block began steaming like it was going to start a fire. We turned off the key, but it wouldn't stop running.......hot spots in the heads were igniting the fuel air mixture........as a last resort we tossed sand and gravel down the carburetor. It finally stopped. We were afraid it would begin burning and some one would call the Fire Dept.

Armand.
