A common swap is the 12:7-1 box out of Transams and Camaros of the late 70's. The problem is what you are experiencing, short stops internal. Two or three ways to go. One is to grab the 77 AMX box and forget you ever had a problem. I have a 73 Hornet box in my American and it is perfect AFAI'm concerned. You can also send your current box in as a core and get a 12:7 box built with out the short stops. Then you end up with about 3 turns lock-lock. The other source for a non stopped 12:7 box is in a 93-98 Grand Cherokee of all places! Yeah, I'm serious. 12:7-1 and NO short stops. I have one here at home and pointed out the source of info to a member here or a forum and he put it on his Comanche pickup and loves it. The only gotcha is to be sure it will bolt up to your car. It only has three mounting lugs cast. The missing lug is different than the missing lug on my American leaving only two and that ain't enough. Now it's not a total loss as the three lugs on the Grand Cherokee box match my 65 Ambassadors box. So, it will probably end up in there. Also around 1978 all boxes went to O-rings instead of flare fittings. You may need to swap hoses.
