Many cars on the list weren't ugly. How many really feel the Delorean, Bricklin and Ferrari fit in with the El Camino (I notice they attack every car with truck like lines and vice versa) as well as the Pacer/Gremlin (which we are predisposed to like). WHAT pray tell do they like for cars? '57 Chev is out of that field (over 50 years ago). How about a '61 Saratoga? H1? Jtrucks? (Oh, I forgot their anti-truck bias) How about a '77 200SX? AMC Eagle (oops! There I go again!) Rolls Royce? Checker cab? Limo? (only thing most of those guys ride in these days) Jim Blair, Lynnwood, WA '87 Comanche, '83 Jeep J10, '84 Jeep J10 From: tom jennings <tomj@xxxxxxx> To: "AMC, Rambler, Nash, Jeep and family" <amc-list@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Re: [AMC-list] ugly cars of past 50 years Message-ID: <BANLkTi=Veb1x_46cK4jtzPKvxdBmDe_FWw@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Certainly there's no accounting for taste. But design is not always about pretty. The question to ask about design is: did it meet it's goals? We love the Gremlin because it is ugly, cute-ugly, but because we know it sure as hell met it's design goals -- quick-to-market success from a cut-down existing design. It was in production for a long time and helped prolong the life of AMC so it sure as hell was a successful design -- ugly or not. Wartburg isn't even ugly -- it's just a FIAT-meets-Datsun as are a lot of "eastern bloc" country cars. It was 30 years ago. Different cultures, different tastes, different markets. Not fair to call someone else's fashion "ugly" unless it's really a stinker. Sad enough, most of the actual design failures are American. Did it meet it's goals? -- Mustang II? NO. Chevy HHR? NO. Cimarron? NO. Prius as a failure? clearly not. Ugly? ... it is a classic meets-design-needs. That fat flea shape (hardly unique to Prius) is a good use of space for a small car. The 60's, 70's are over -- thank $DIETY -- all the people I know who own them love them and not many of them are car people. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
