There are several of us who have put Mustang T5 manual transmissions in our 
AMCs.
I did this swap into my white 70 Javelin.
John Elle has a very good explanation of the process, go to this site

Everything you need to know is there.
It's an easy swap, just need to find the correct parts and pieces.

Swaps for other 5 speed and 6 speed transmissions are out there also.
The 300 lb/ft World Class T5 from a Mustang  GT can handle a street AMC 
engine.
