This is getting off-topic so delete it if you are offended...... Actually I know a little about recycling those batteries (smaller versions of those in the Prius). We handle a lot of small NiMH batteries at work along with many other kinds of batteries in recycling electronics. The NiMH batteries go to one of several vendors in the U.S. which crush them and recover plastics and ferrous metals from the cases and melt the cores into an alloy that is sold to the steel industry. According to a recent third party audit at a recycler we use in Wisconsin, almost nothing goes to landfill. Even the paper from battery labels is sold to the recycle fiber industry. And they aren't shipped as hazardous waste per se. They may have a hazardous materials designation under the DOT rules but they are shipped as Universal Waste which doesn't require the paperwork, special transporters, etc. of hazardous waste. Oh and some Rambler content: I found what I hope is the proper shift rod for the Rambler Classic but I got the homemade rod (made by the P.O.) to work yesterday anyway. The "proper" shift rod is being shipped from AZ later this week. The seller is parting out a 64 Classic 660 in the phoenix area. You can see his ad on craigslist and he is very easy to deal with. I still haven't moved the car under it's own power yet though. Like I've said before I'm slow.
