I've had people tell me they set the gears up by nothing but the tooth pattern chart. They start a little high on the shim thickness (or don't crush the collar much) then check pattern and adjust until it's right. Takes longer, but no special tools needed.

Oh yeah almost forgot, I could really use some more hints and tips about
putting the thing back together. I've been reading the TSM, but of course I
have none of the special tools they show. Can anyone help with advice on
setting the pinion to the correct spot and installing the differential to
the correct mesh, and getting axles in the correct spot?
Also rebuilding a Twin grip to install, got any tips for
disassembly/reassembly without the AMC special tools?
