i think you need to compare this firewall to a later xj/mj to see if
you do indeed have the 4.0 notch, before going ahead with a 4.0 swap.

as joe says, just putting another 60* v6 in would be easiest.  nb. gm
redesigned the 2.8 for '87, with fixes for many of its ills, and also
making it internally balanced instead of externally, so you can't use
the existing flexplate without first removing its balance weights.
all 3.1 and 3.4 also are internal balance.  going with a tbi or mpi
version should pick some mileage up and probably be more trouble free.

i also think an xj 2.5 would be perfectly adequate for your parent's
grocery runs, and definitely an easier swap than a 4.0 if you don't
have the firewall notch - maybe easier even if you do, since it also
used a tf904/30rh/30re [except on '87-'93 xj, aw4] and you wouldn't
have to disturb the t/c.  better mileage than a 4.0, by an mpg or 2.

just for grins, another engine swap possibility is a dakota 3.9 v6,
preferably mpi as i hear the carbed are gas hogs.  it's wide but they
put 318s and 360s in zjs...  and its tf999 should slip right into the
place of your tf904.

and also, if they're really packing the groceries in, i agree an xj
would suit them better than this mj.
