run across a 1kz?  3 liter and turbo, more powerful than any of the L
series and newer, so presumably benefiting from experience.  also
normally comes with r150 and a340 trans families.

newest but electronic is the 1kd, cdi and more powerful yet and also
claiming 21% better fuel efficiency - presumably than the 1kz, which
has identical internal dimensions.  there's also a 2.5L 2kd.  again
the r150 and a340 trannies come with, in vehicles like the current-gen
hilux.

there are other toyota diesels, but imho they're either too small or
too big/heavy for the xj/mj.

there are also a few mercedes possibilities, since jeep has recently
used both daimler nsg370 stick and w5a580 auto trannies.  an om606 i6
from a '98-9 e300td is my favorite.
