Go for it!

I can pull the oil pump out of the engine in the car by taking out the bolt
that holds the idler arm pivot to the chassis. Just swing it out of the way,
just enough room to pull the pump comfortably.

If you drop-dead can't fit the oil pump with the filter attachment, you
could make a new cover like I did, put an OLD oil pump in with a blockout
plate under it to plug the inlet and plumb it like mine. Zero downside
tech-wise just a bit of simple fabrication.

THe oil filter location is about ideal, couldn't really be better. Easy to
get from under the car, tucked up tight to the block etc.
