Yes, do check the relief spring setup and/or if you have the bypass flapper (if
you do ... you can get a pump cover withOUT one.
Cold idle rebuilt should be 40-65 PSI . Warm should be no less than 20 PSI,
usually is more about 45-50 PSI if the pump gears/housing are set up properly.
Standard old-shool rule of thumb was 10-psi for every 1000 RPM. I personally
want to see more than 10-PSI at 1000 RPM.

I recently had a rebuild done on a 70 390 engine. What oil pressure should I be
getting at idle? I am afraid I may end up pulling this engine back out.

Jim,
Don’t pull the engine until you check the oil pressure relief spring system.
If the relief spring is too weak or installed wrong, it may be bypassing most of
the pumps output.
