In returning to the original them ( as old memories are old, sigh). 
I would advise removing carpet and pads from leaking areas. 
   Placing any sort of waterproof barrier on top of material traps the moisture between the layers and will vastly increase corrosion. 

   Just look under the rubber mats in a base model, like mine, you will find they rust mush worse then carpeted models.
