I'm getting in late on this thread and you solved the problem already, but I have used a big ol socket that is just smaller than the yoke opening to seat the clip.
Give the socket a good rap, after cleaning everything first, and it should seat. If it doesn't seat after one or two raps then check everything out and as you found out, you have a needle bearing loose.
If you damage the bearing you can always pull a good one out of the old u-joint.......Russ
