The 258 replaced the 232, the 232 replaced the 199 in 1971 when the 258 came out. Deck height of the block was raised ~1/8" for the extra stroke of the 258. The 243 (4.0L) has a 3.44" stroke, 232 has a 3.50" stroke. So you would gain a few inches, but not enough to warrant the swap. The 258 has a 3.895" stroke and increases displacement by 37 cubic inches when used in the 4.0L block (over the standard 4.0L stroke). Well worth the effort! More autos got the 258 simply because the trans takes more power to operate than a manual. There are 232 auto equipped cars, but the wise dealer didn't order many of them. Either engine could be ordered with either trans as far as I know. -------------- Date: Sun, 22 Aug 2010 20:05:45 -0400 From: Richard Estermyer<javelinman74@xxxxxxxxxxx> Hey Gang, Just checking our Field of Gremlins today and finding that the 232 and the 258 seems to be an option throughout the years. We thought that the 258 was the successor to the 232. We did notice that the 232's were in the stick shifts and the 258 had automatics. Is this the main reason? Also I know the 258's are the internal start to strokers, is the 232 also? Was it a bore increase or stroke? -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Motors Cars" Magazine (AMC) For all AMC enthusiasts http://www.amc-mag.com (free download available!) _______________________________________________ AMC-list mailing list AMC-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://list.amc-list.com/listinfo.cgi/amc-list-amc-list.com
