[AMC-list] 83 concord gas tank/BBD carb stumbles

I just recently had a similar leak on my 81 concord under the tank. It would leak only when the engine was running, when the Fuel pump was drawing fuel. The shop put it up on the lift and changed the numerous rubber lines going to and from the tank and sending unit, the return line to the charcoal canister and the rollover check valve which stops fuel from leaking in an over turned situation. The gas cap is vented if I recall and is not pressurized, but I changed mine anyway. A stant cap is readily available. It seems sometimes if the tank is very full on a hot day, there is some pressure released when the cap is taken off. My car always ran great but this year , when I started using it again it was running poorly, stalling stumble at idel and id have to use the gas and brake to keep the car running. Put mystery oil in the tank and after several tanks of even shell gas, it was the same. Figured hi had the dreaded BBD carb problems and would have to take off the carb. Instea
d I first put in a bottle of gumout fuel system cleaner, the gold colored stuff with a full tank of gas. No difference until 280 miles then all of a sudden, the stumble was gone. amazing, running and purring like a kitten. maybe I was just lucky, but if anyone has that issue, try a bottle of that first and drive till the tank is almost empty. Worked for my like a charm. Car had been my daily driver for the last 4 weeks while I am doing brakes on my 03 suv. Just turned 83K miles. usually the mechanic in the bottle doesn't work but this time he was in there.
Now I have to work on the door latch pins, thanks for the info. Looked up the part number, and the pic of the part but it is all metal, does not have the plastic sleeve in it so wonder if that is good or bad. I think it said it was for GM applications, not for Ford. Thanks for the info.
Hmm, then its new brakes, trans. fluid change and the usual to keep me busy.
Regards.
 Ken/boston

"

" Is the gas tank supposed to be pressurized on this car? I have a leak

" at the rear and it is either a cracked hose or that valve back there,

" I think it is a roll-over valve. Either way, it leaves a puddle about

" the size of a large platter when I turn it off, then eventuall stops.

" I found that I can take off the cap and it will stop immediately. I

" can't get to it until Saturday.

isn't the tank supposed to be vented through a charcoal canister? if

it's overfilled, gas can get into the line and hydrolock the vent.

" When I pulled the cap I got a whoosh of vaccuum that I never noticed

" before. I wonder if the pump jocky mixed up caps last time.....Russ

could be another symptom.
