They weren't 300 cu/in. Closer to 4.5L or 278 cubic inch but were called 282 (and the 252 smaller engine) I think that error was because they used the same conversion chart NASA did for the Mars rockets that were waaay off base! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VAM_Lerma I had one (didn't know at the time until I tried to ID the casting on the motor I had. (AFTER I had pulled the crank and tossed the old pistons and block!) It came in the '83 Eagle wagon I had before Y2k (It had been swapped in by the PO from his Mexican CJ and the 4.2 from the Eagle put in the CJ. They left everything loose and it ran like crap so I got it cheap) It had a ton of torque, but wasn't good at high RPMs. I killed 3 998 trans pulling my 5 ton trailer (made out of an ex-Army IH bus body on a mobile home frame and loaded with almost 20 years of spare parts bound for the swap meets) Prior to the trailer, I used a '67 GMC bus (like the one in the movie Speed) to take stuff to the meets till I sold enough to build the trailer. Using an Eagle may not have been the best choice (I didn't know about all the upgrades at the time and it was still fairly soon after the car fell on my head) but if the '83 Cherokee full size I bought for parts came with a 727 instead of a 999, I wouldn't have fixed the Jeep up (it needed a motor and I had just found major rot in the rear frame of my Eagle where the axle springs bolted on) I ran that motor in the Jeep until it accidentally ran out of oil when the pressure sending unit blew off on I-5. I kept feeding it oil from a case of 50W I had till that ran out and I ran it the last 15 miles dry, but it still ran the next day (albeit with loud noises) All the pistons were damaged (broken lands and busted rings) and it made bad noises till I tore it down to make my stroker from. Building an over bored 4.0L with a 258 crank will get you the same numbers, plus it is ready for the 4.0L head.
