The hardest part of doing AC at home is the vacuum pumpdown. Harbor
Fright sells a pump really cheeep. It's a good way to check for leaks
too. The vacuum should be held for some time (I forget, 10 minutes?)
to boil off trapped gases etc and leak check.

In my case, I didn't have a vacuum pump at all! I went to 4, 5 shops
and none would fill my system! I finally found one place that would.
They got it all pumped down, then found that their filling system was
broken! Duh! So I drove home with an evacuated system and filled it
myself.

The TSM should say how many lbs/ounces of freon.

Was this an R12 system, switching to H134? I am no AC expert, but I
did my own from scratch a few years back and did a bunch of research.
As posted here before, the oils are incompatible, but there are
R12-compatible fluids I think, besides H134a, for "upgrading" old R12
systems without having to do the whole 9 yards. Generally you need to
switch all the hoses and all that.

The expansion valve problem (one calibrated for R12, but used on
H134a) just isn't that serious. My 75 Gremlin was switched to H134 but
kept the stock dash unit, and it cooled like crazy. It had all new
hoses, a Sanden compressor, but the stock condenser and evap unit.

All I remember was the the filling process seemed VERy WEIRD! Noises,
gurgling, etc but it went OK. I completely forget how I filled mine;
it was all custom (VintageAir stuff) but essentially I filled it until
I got the right pressures indicated and that was 5 or more years ago,
totally trouble-free operation since then, no leaks and still cold. I
get 40 degrees temp drop from it.
