Prior to 1980 3.08 was the common highway gear then after the switch to 727 trans, 2.72 became the "economy" gear. J20s commonly came with 3.73 but had lower gears with the tow package.

Both my 80 J20s (auto, 8400lb GVW) have 3.73s.
