My 83 is the same way. The 74 has 3.55 gears though, and I'm going to use those with 30" tires and a five speed. I question the wisdom of the high gears. With no load they *might* provide a bit of fuel economy at 55-60, but any load or higher speeds will bring that way down, and city driving too. Shouldn't have went higher than a 3.00-3.15 (3.08 maybe?). Might have cut 1-2 mpg in highway mileage, but gained it in city driving. I'm also thinking about building a stroker but leaving the 390 4V carb on it with the higher compression (around 9.7:1) with a better cam. I'm getting a better cam even if I leave the supposedly low mile 258 in. With the 3.55 gears and bigger tires I figure I'm going to be limited to a top economical cruise speed of 65 anyway, even with the five speed. Heck, anything that isn't really aerodynamic sort of hits a wall at 65 -- to go faster requires a great deal more power. Forget where I read that 65 was the threshold... --------------- Date: Tue, 01 Jun 2010 12:11:59 -0600 From: Ken Ames<ameskg@xxxxxxxxx> Yep, you don't want to be in a hurry. My 85 J10 has a 258 that's getting a bit tired even with just 135,000 kms (84000 mi). With 2.72 diffs it has to work hard all the time. Most headwinds have it running a lot of throttle just to keep 60mph. -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Motors Cars" Magazine (AMC) For all AMC enthusiasts http://www.amc-mag.com (free download available!) _______________________________________________ AMC-list mailing list AMC-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://list.amc-list.com/listinfo.cgi/amc-list-amc-list.com
