Good synopsis -- better than mine! That would be a 70 390, 401 came out in 71, 1970 two biggest was the 360 and 390. The 70 390 is an unusual beast! Has the taller deck of the 360/401 and I think it shares rods with the 401. I know it has special one year only pistons with a special pin height to make it a 390. The reason was to keep the 390 in the last year AMX without "one upping" it in the other cars with the 401. Just marketing -- AMC had put a lot of money into making the 390 AMX motor well known in the two seater. I guess they didn't think it was worth the effort to keep it after the two seater AMX was dropped. ----------- Date: Wed, 26 May 2010 12:22:56 -0600 From: Ken Ames<ameskg@xxxxxxxxx> The biggest and second-biggest of the engines each year shared heads. 343/390 360/401 1971 390? I don't believe I've heard of one. : ) -- Frank Swygert Publisher, "American Motors Cars" Magazine (AMC) For all AMC enthusiasts http://www.amc-mag.com (free download available!) _______________________________________________ AMC-list mailing list AMC-list@xxxxxxxxxxxx http://list.amc-list.com/listinfo.cgi/amc-list-amc-list.com
