The 195.6 OHV does drain back fairly cleanly, but there will be increased oil against the cover seal, and yeah, extra oil there probably means "enhanced" leaking. My drive to work is 55 minutes at 60mph each way, that's 2400 - 2500 rpm cruise speed. I'll see if there's any increase in leaking (wasn't any, before) but that would be a small price to pay for improved overall oiling. So -- get this -- I have a coolant leak at the front edge of the block. A seep, drips onto the water pump. OK, now I am more than 100% certain, checked times three, new gasket, milled flat and checked by me with a straightedge and feelers, etc etc etc, and it seeps. OK I probably did not check to see if the block has a bit of rolloff radius at the edge, say. I did put Right Stuff on the very edge of the head/block area along the plugs, but did not at the front and rear edges. Obviously I wish I did. Not only did I spray two coats on both sides of the gasket and let dry tacky, properly, I manually gently dabbed a thin bead of the same stuff (Permatex copper) around --> ALL <-- the steam/water holes on the block AND head, to ensure I actually wet the surface and any microscratches in the surface with sealer. I figured a few thou of thicker sealer a few tenths of an inch wide around those holes would not hurt. I've got Bar's Leaks copper sealer in the radiator now. Seems to be stopping. I looked at my spare block, there's a steam hole about 1/4"? from the front edge. I assume the leak is from there. We know these engines were not THIS bad when new(er). Why they are all a PITA now is beyond me. I hear that GM "recommends" tablets of sealer "supplements" (like vitamins?) in the cooling system of some newer engines. It may be good prophylactic treatment for the 195.6 OHV even for ones without a problem. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
