I just think the internal pump pressure is much higher than it is in the main gallery. It has to be some, but I wouldn't think it was that much over 100 psi. There's no way all three springs and plungers from 196 engines could have failed. I agree with your logic, the pump pressure shouldn't be more than the relief, but apparently it is. You're getting pressure to the oil filter straight off the pump, not off the gallery.

I got my new 195.6 OHV running, but not without problems.

I replaced the oil pressure relief spring with a shorter/softer one,
refilled etc, and within 5 seconds puked oil out the same place (pushed out
the oil filter gasket). Then I tried the "other" plunger. Same thing. Then I
put in the shortest, softest spring, and ... it held.
