Not sure which type you're referring to, but if it's the sport mirror for a Javelin you can get it with a Phillips screwdriver. The trick is to push the glass as far as you can to one corner, remove the opposite screw and then reverse the procedure for the other one. It barely fits, but can be done.

"Does anyone know if there is a special tool to take the screws out  
that hold the glass in an exterior mirror head? I have tried a few  
different things but no luck. The mirror glass is still good I just  
need to take it out because  I am having it repainted so I need to  
remove the glass then put it back after the head is painted."
