there's your reason, no leverage on the wheel.  i don't consider
myself an ironman, but i found 16:1 with stock 17" wheel just fine on
my american.

it does call for some effort at low speed and i quickly learned to
creep the car when i needed to crank the wheel, but i have never
needed to grunt.
