Cheap paint places like Maaco (anyone remember Earl Scheib?) are hit-n-miss. They also have a high turn-over rate for the sprayers. I've generally had good luck with them, but only because I do 80+% of the prep work for them. Take everything you can off or they mask it over or paint it over. Anything special that you don't want painted (like the door tag! only thing they ever did I didn't like was paint mine) it's best to mask over before you take it. I'd even go so far as sanding it with 120 grit wet sand paper. They will "wash" it with 200 or so then paint. When you take the time to do as much of the prep you can AND have an interesting or unusual car, they generally take a bit more care, as it's easy to see YOU took a lot of interest and time on it.
Do go look at a few cars at the shop that are waiting for pickup if you go this route. You can see what they skimp on and make sure you do that first. If the paint looks good then fine! Remember, most people just drop a car off then come by later and pick it up -- it might not even have been washed first! Those won't have a great paint job on them. I've had several painted by such cheap paint outfits and had satisfactory results. Don't expect a show car finish, just "satisfactory" -- meaning there will be a few flaws, but nothing should jump out at you -- you should have to look for them. Every car owner does!! Even my higher dollar jobs have had a couple flaws, but most I missed until weeks later when waxing or cleaning something and getting closer than normal.
