don't forget some have a plug near the firewall that goes to the trans!

Could be! Check a wiring diagram. The neutral safety switch connects two wires that pass power through the starter when in neutral and park. Any other gear and that wire connection is broken. You just need to find the two wires and jump them together... if that's the problem. The wires should be near the base of the steering column, where the neutral safety switch resided.
