I don't recall them saying that the open end of the clip is facing the long side of the handle (slide the tool parallel to the handle, open end going "in") though.If the door panels are crumbly you might want to get a piece of luan plywood or 1/8" masonite and make new ones. Just use the old as a pattern and pull the vinyl off, gluing it to the new. Then you're good for another 40 years or more! For the window regulators (that's what the "winder" mechanism is called), spray with something like WD-40 to loosen up can clean first. Wouldn't hurt to spray. let sit a couple minutes, then wipe down. WD-40 or other penetrating type oils don't stay on long, so get a can of spray lithium grease to spray the mechanism with. That will stick and keep them lubed for a long time.
