I only know what I read, I don't build engines often enough to know/retain squat. I am checking on all parts, NOS vs. new manufacture Actually there is no such thing as a "Chrome Moly" ring. I don't know where this got started but the term has been around as long as I can remember. "ChromeMoly" is a type of steel. In piston rings you are referring to the coating for the top ring. This can be either "Chrome" or "Moly". There is SO much information on rings on the net already I won't try and duplicate it here. This is a good place to start,, http://www.stockcarracing.com/techarticles/scrp_0510_piston_rings_basics/ind ex.html Chrome faced rings are not meant to reduce friction but to resist wear as Chrome is very hard. It's still used in dirt track engines or anyplace wear resistance is the top factor. There have been so any advances made in the Moly coatings it now rivals Chrome in many respects and surpass it in most others. MOST rings you see now days will be Moly. Rings have become SO thin that in many instances a solid steel (hardened) ring is all that will survive. I have had EXCELLENT results using TotalSeal rings in my race engines. As a company they have been MOST helpful in answering questions and being able to supply hard to find rings. But HEY,,, that's just ME!
