Re: [AMC-list] tranny

Jim, all six cylinder Eagles have the 998. The 998 is very similar to the 904 externally. The only difference I recall off-hand is that the 998 has one or two reinforcing ribs on the side of the case. Internally there are a few differences, mainly a stronger front pump in the 998. I don't have an 84 TSM, but do have the 82 and the 83 supplement. Both state that all four cylinder cars got the 904 along with two wheel drive six cylinder cars. All Eagle six cylinder models got the 998. All four cylinder cars got a conventional torque converter, all six cylinder models used a lock-up torque converter. So unless yours was changed out at some point it should be a 998. It's quite a few years old -- unless you're the original owner it is possible that it was changed. For normal street use the 904 should be fine.
