The rag joint is for vibration and maybe more, but it's not for safety so directly. For those that havent seen one, the collapsible section isn't a rod, it's a "cage"/tube made of expanded metal, about 3" diameter if I recall, about a foot of it. It keeps it's stiffness until it's deformed, like a cardboard tube does. There's more to the design like a break-away column mount etc as someone else wrote. Frank fit one in a 64 Classic. But no way they'd fit in the early American (pre-64). That car is SMALL. I don't think most AMCers who don't drive one realize how small it is. The steering column from wheel to instrument panel is like 3". With my palms FLAT on the steering wheel, I can touch the windshield and instrument panel! From the drivers seat, I can reach my arm in back and put my palm flat on the rear tire well. SMALL! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
