OK, I guess I'll add my 2 cents worth. Formula cars use 6 point restraint system with arm restraints,, solid seat made of fiberglass no cushion, ( we used to pour two part expanding foams into a plastic bag, place it behind the driver in the car and let the foam expand to make a seat that fit only the subject) crush boxes at front, both front and behind the driver roll hoops, head was restrained from movement by the roll hoop and the sidebars of the chassis. You felt like you were a part of the car. The big ticket item as Senna, Earnhart a few others would tell you if they could, is to keep the driver inside the car, strapped to a solid seat (the SCCA showroom stock cars were allowed to change to racing seats due to back injuries occurring from the use of soft production seats), head restrained. Fancy technology does apply here but indirectly, computer simulations crash these cars over and over until they are ready for the real crash test and it can be determined how to make them safer. Carbon fiber has become an integral part of so many race cars now because of it's high tech strengths and light weight. G-force meters check up on things in crashes which reveals the dynamics of the crash.
