The 998 has the same small neck front pump as the 904 (the weakest point of these trans, but it has been improved upon with the oven brazed necks) but it has a wider rear band (which is why the case is slightly bigger) and the beefing of the case was so it could take the extra force of the bigger band locking the rear drum (in the 904, the band usually broke before the case did)
   999 has the bigger neck and most take the same converter as a 727. It also has a bigger one way sprague to handle the first gear load. I currently have 2 99xs. One in my '82 Spirit (998 with the converter about to kack) and one empty case of a 999 from a '99 or '00 Wrangler I was going to build up.
   I have an '80 Eagle 998 as well but that goes with the '76 Postal Jeep project that it's in for $600 (my son was converting it to 4x4 with Jeep NP208 and a pair of XJ axles but had to go back to Canada and now can't come back to the US)

You're pretty much correct Nick. 2WD six cylinder cars got the 904, 304 and 4x4 six cylinder cars (and Jeeps) got the 998 and later the 999. All are based on the 904. I was once told that the 998 was basically a 904 with a 727 front pump assembly. There's more to it than just that, the 998 has a stronger case (more reinforcement ribs at least) and some stronger internals as well, but is based primarily on the 904 design. The 999 adds some other strength (power handling!) enhancements, but I don't know the exact details on either.
